Highland Wrestling
Scottish Highland wrestling began in the misty ages of the Celts and Picts, possibly earlier than the 6th century A.D. It is the oldest style of wrestling known, except for the Greeks. Also known as Cumberland wrestling or Backhold wrestling, this competition requires wearing of the kilt in its traditional form.
In 1997 and 1998, Kenny Price was light heavyweight champion in Highland wrestling at the Grandfather Mountain games. Since then, he has worked to start this Scottish form of wrestling at games around the country. Only 3 or 4 games nationally offer this sport so far, with Kansas City being the most recent. Interest is growing in renewing this ancient event that requires strength, strategy and tenacity to succeed.
Highland wrestling offers three weight classes in which to compete. Wrestlers stand facing each other, bare chested and barefooted, and clasp hands around the back of opponents, chest to chest. At the signal, each tries to get the opponent to the ground without breaking their handclasp. Breaking the handclasp is an automatic loss. The athlete with 2 out of 3 falls is the match winner.
Friday night will see our Highland Wrestling Tournament, held by torchlight in a circle on our grassy fields. Come sign up by 7 p.m. and be ready for competition by 8 p.m. Check the schedule and map for exact location of this exciting new event. Don't miss the action from this brawny group!
