Highland DancerScots were dancing to celebrate war and victory when the Romans arrived in Britain in the First Century. In the 2,000 years since that invasion, the warlike dances of the Scottish Highlands have been refined into a highly technical art form. Strength and grace combine to yield dancers who are capable of making the dances not only look easy, but enjoyable. The dances themselves are divided into two categories: The Highland and the Scottish National dances. The Highland dances are more militaristic and are always performed with the dancers in kilts. The National dances are smoother and more flowing and various costumes are worn.

During today's competitions, three contestants take the stage at one time, while judges provide detailed evaluations for accuracy, timing, technique and the dance itself.
